My passion for community based programming began in 2010. I landed the amazing opportunity of working with Healthy Sisters Healthy Lives and it was an experience that transformed my life. I worked with high school age girls, teaching them about all of the good stuff: self esteem, finances, relationships, nutrition, dating and goal setting. This type of education brought the girls ALIVE. Our girls shared in a way that opened them up, and helped them learn the power in their own voices to advocate for their dreams and communities. I was hooked.
Since then, I continue to support and develop programs and events that meet the need to uplift voices in our communities.
KRCL 90.9 FM - Changing the Narrative
Changing the Narrative was birthed through Billy Palmer's vision that our communities hold the key to change. I've joined his team as a co host helping to interview our community members and produce content that lifts up narratives that breathe life into the power of community voice.
Say What?!? - Dream Week 2018
In 2017 and 2018, I directed programs for the Black Writers of San Antonio. The Black Writers of San Antonio started off as a group designed to build community and support for Black authors. It grew to serve the community through events and education. We held several events during the year that I served; events on Black male authorship, sharing our stories from our perspective, and one of my favorites - Say What?!?
Say What?!? was a collaboration event with San Antonio's Dream Week and the public library. This event was a response, a crying out response in frustration to the injustices people of color have been experiencing in our nation. I worked to design, implement, and build out the marketing campaign for the event.
Workforce Skill Development with Courageous Women Association (CWA)
With CWA I supported their workforce development program and co-facilitated an interview skills workshop. We discussed interview skills, held mock interviews and discussed how to approach tough questions such as lack of work history and/or criminal records. We touched on those core elements, but the heart of the work emerged when we got our clients to open up about living out their purpose. We finished the series helping our clients develop plans to realize their dreams and live courageously.
Sister to Sister Program - Lincoln Ave Church of Christ
Sister to Sister is a faith based program for girls that incorporated youth activities, biblical teaching and mentoring. To make it all work, I set up a committee to help delegate tasks and build engagement around the project. We were highly successful in collaborating, developing a strong curriculum and setting up a program that sustained even after I had to move on.
I am always happy to support programming that builds and uplifts under-served communities. For inquiries and availability please contact me! [email protected]
